Description

The Women’s Coffee Project – San Alberto represents one of the most inspiring initiatives in contemporary Colombian coffee. It was born in the heart of the Santander department, within the small rural community of San Alberto, from an ambitious and profoundly human idea: to prove that coffee quality and the dignity of women’s work can grow together.

The protagonists of this initiative are the women of the cooperative EMURSA (Equipo de Mujeres Rurales de San Alberto), founded in 2015 by a group of 22 producers determined to improve their lives through the land, collaboration, and knowledge. Over time, the project has expanded to involve more than fifty families, combining agricultural expertise, entrepreneurial spirit, and a strong commitment to environmental and social sustainability.

San Alberto is a remote village, reachable only after several hours of travel from the main cities, located between 1,550 and 1,800 meters above sea level. The surrounding mountains, rich in forests and natural springs, offer an ideal microclimate for cultivating Arabica coffee. Here, the women of EMURSA work small plots, often less than two hectares, growing traditional varieties such as Castillo, Colombia, and Typica with care, respect, and patience.

Their agriculture is natural and regenerative: no pesticides or chemical fertilizers, but instead self-produced compost, biological pest control, and reforestation. The fertile volcanic soil, combined with regular rainfall and natural shade, creates a balanced ecosystem that enhances biodiversity and allows the production of cherries of exceptional quality.

After a meticulous hand-picking process, where only perfectly ripe cherries are harvested, the fruit is taken to the cooperative’s micro-washing stations for controlled fermentation. The coffee undergoes a washed process: it is depulped, fermented for 24–48 hours in water tanks, washed again to remove all mucilage residues, and finally dried under the sun on raised beds. This carefully executed method produces a clean, bright, and harmonious cup that reflects the complexity of Colombia’s terroir.

The result is a 100% Arabica specialty coffee with a rich, sweet, and balanced sensory profile. In the cup, it delivers a soft and velvety experience: aromas of dark cocoa and butter biscuits open the tasting, followed by the sweetness of peach and candied apricot, with subtle hints of caramel and honey on the finish. The acidity is fine and lively, perfectly integrated into the medium, rounded body, while the aftertaste is long and clean, leaving a natural sweetness and refined clarity.

Each sip is a tangible testament to collective growth and empowerment. Through the EMURSA project, producers gain access to agronomic training, leadership development, financial support, and direct channels to the specialty market. This allows them to receive fair compensation, improve their families’ quality of life, and reinvest in their community by promoting education, autonomy, and innovation.

The Women’s Coffee Project is therefore more than just an excellent coffee—it is a story of resilience and progress, a living example of how high-quality agriculture can become a powerful tool for social change.

Those who choose this coffee support an ethical, transparent, and traceable supply chain, becoming part of a development model built on genuine values: gender equality, environmental sustainability, and the empowerment of rural communities.

Colombia San Alberto – Women’s Coffee Project (EMURSA) is perfect for those who love balanced coffees with a smooth, sweet, and expressive profile. As an espresso, it reveals its creaminess and notes of biscuit and chocolate; in moka, it shows balance and persistence; and in filter methods (V60, Chemex, Aeropress), it offers maximum aromatic complexity with accents of ripe fruit and white flowers.

A coffee to be enjoyed mindfully, knowing that behind every bean lie the hands, faces, and dreams of women who are rewriting the story of Colombian coffee.
