Description

Guatemala Huehuetenango Femenino – Asociación de Agricultores El Esfuerzo is much more than just coffee: it is a social, cultural, and human project that encapsulates the strength and resilience of Guatemalan women in every bean.

This coffee is part of the Slow Food Coffee Coalition, a movement that protects biodiversity and promotes the work of small-scale producers. The Café Femenino project was born to give voice and dignity to women who, after decades of conflict and profound social injustice, chose to redeem themselves through coffee cultivation. Between 1978 and 1983, Guatemala was the scene of one of the darkest periods in its history: during the civil war, entire indigenous Mayan communities were massacred, and many women, surviving violence and deprivation, found in coffee a means of resistance and rebirth.

Even today, the farmers carry on this legacy, transforming it into a daily commitment of work and hope. Guatemala Femenino's production is managed exclusively by the women of the El Esfuerzo Farmers' Association, from planting the crops to marketing. This guarantees them fair compensation, but above all, a path to social and economic emancipation that breaks down centuries-old patterns of marginalization.

Grown in the San Pedro Necta region of Huehuetenango, at over 1,800 meters above sea level, the coffee is harvested by hand with careful selection of the ripe fruit. The process is washed, with fermentation in a tank, washing, and subsequent drying in the sun or in solar dryers. The varieties used are Typica, Bourbon, and Caturra, all prized and capable of producing refined and complex cups. Harvest takes place from January to March, when the weather conditions are ideal. In the cup, Guatemala Café Femenino offers an elegant and balanced aromatic profile, characterized by floral and citrus notes, delicate sweetness, and a silky body. The acidity is lively yet harmonious, typical of Huehuetenango coffees, while the finish leaves a pleasant lingering note of tropical fruit and fine cocoa. Perfect for filter brewing methods such as V60, Chemex, and Aeropress, but also capable of delivering great expressiveness as an espresso.

Choosing this coffee means not only tasting one of the finest expressions of Guatemalan specialty coffee, but also supporting the women producers who, through their work, continue a story of memory, resistance, and the future. With Guatemala Femenino, every sip becomes an act of awareness and a sensory journey into the heart of Mayan culture and female resilience.
