Description

The Slow Food Community Productores de Café Colaborativo Jacoba La Unión Nariño was founded in 2023 in collaboration with the Asprounión cooperative, located in La Unión, Nariño. The main goal of this community is to transform coffee producing families into socially, economically and environmentally sustainable business units.

To achieve this goal, an active participation model was chosen, in which each peasant family is directly involved in every phase of the supply chain, from cultivation to marketing of the coffee. The region of the Nariño department, in the south-west of Colombia, is renowned for the quality of its coffee, as well as being characterized by a high concentration of small producers. The average size of farms is only 1.13 hectares, which implies meticulous care and attention to production to maximize yield and quality. Coffee is grown in 35 of the 62 municipalities in the department, taking advantage of an area rich in biodiversity and varied ecosystems.

At altitudes of up to 2,300 meters above sea level, the beans ripen slowly, developing a sensorial profile characterized by a strong citric acidity, accompanied by sweet notes of chocolate and caramel. In parallel with joining the Slow Food Coffee Coalition, the community has decided to adopt a participatory guarantee system (PGS), which complements the already existing third-party certifications. This alternative certification method is based on trust, collaboration and active participation, allowing producers to work closely with different actors in the supply chain to guarantee the quality of their coffee, in line with the values expressed in the SFCC manifest.

An Ethics Committee, made up of community members, coordinates visits to the fields with the Guarantee Group, collecting detailed information on each producing family and ensuring compliance with the guidelines shared among all the communities adhering to the Coffee Coalition. A key role in this process is played by Luis Carlos Burbano Gomez, manager of Asprounión and leader of the Slow Food Community since its foundation. Thanks to his commitment, he has become a reference figure within the Coffee Coalition, participating in international events and bringing the experience of Nariño's producing families to the global scene, promoting good, clean and fair coffee.
